What Does a Fan Clutch Do on a Car Radiator Fan?

The fins on the silicone filled hub of the fan clutch sense temperature. When the ambient temperature of the air passing across the hub is cool it allows the fan blades to turn slowly, reducing under-hood noise and waisting engine power. When the air passing through the radiator heats-up the center hub nearly spins the fan blades as fast as the water-pump impeller pulling air through the radiator shroud.

1. What should I do when I use normal water instead of coolant in a car radiator?

I'm very surprised, 7 answers and only one of them mentioned what I believe to be most applicable in the OP's situation.Like Daniel Bumiller . said, since you said coolant instead of antifreeze, you are probably in a warmer region. But he failed to mention what Richard Widman mentioned which is that coolant also raises the boiling point of water. So here's a complete answer:Freezing point - If you live in a freezing climate, water will freeze in your engine block, coolant reservoir, coolant passages and radiator.nna. More than likely this will cause your expansion plugs (also known as freeze plugs) to pop out, which can be an expensive repair. The vehicle cannot be driven to the mechanic, it would have to be towed. nnb. Also, your water pump will be seized because of the ice, and therefore whatever is driving your water pump (whether it is your timing belt, external fan belt, serpentine belt, or drive gear) will slip or break.nnc. there might be other damage associated with this scenario, but I live in a tropical country. I have never had the experience or felt the need to study these effects. Boiling Point - Regardless of what climate you live in, a vehicle's operating temperature is usually higher than the boiling point of water. If the fluid in your cooling system starts boiling while you are operating the vehicle, several things can happen.nna. air is introduced into the system. This can cause unreliable performance of the temperature gauge, inefficient cooling by the radiator, water pump damage, and possible overheating of the engine. nnb. boiling will also cause the water to evaporate, and your engine will overheat once sufficient water has been lost.Rust inhibition - the coolant is only part of the rust prevention in an engine, but important nonetheless. Improper grounding of the engine will cause electrolysis to occur, which will eat at your radiator core like acid thru steel. Good quality coolant also has the ability to absorb a certain amount of electrolysis. Along with the presence of rust inhibitors, it is imperative to use it for rust prevention. So there you have it, a combination of points gathered from different answers, broken down with explanations for each one. I hope you learned something new from this.Cheers! What should I do when I use normal water instead of coolant in a car radiator?

2. Did you know the next time the mechanic says you have a leak in your car radiator, just ask him to show you where? According to Consumers Report it's a big scam.

Passive aggressive much?Did you know it is up to the customer to verify the problem and the repair in order to not be ripped off?Any reputable shop will want to show you the problem and explain things to you. In my shop we take pictures and text them to your phone even if you see the damage first hand.Something like a coolant leak will be visible (unless its leaking inside the motor which will have other obvious symptoms) with residue or bubbling from a pressure test. Ball joints, tie rods, exhaust repairs and tire problems are also mostly obvious if you know how the part is supposed to move and not supposed to move.At the end of the day I will trust my own skepticism and due diligence before waiting on consumer reports to tell me how I am being ripped off.Did you know the next time the mechanic says you have a leak in your car radiator, just ask him to show you where? According to Consumers Report it's a big scam.

3. How do i drain the water from my car radiator? engine keeps goin up2 the max and the water is orange!?

there is a small valve on the one of the bottom corners of the radiator. spin to open and it will start letting the water out. if the water was orange then there may not have been any anti-freeze mixed with the water. also may be a good idea to check the thermostat out and back flush the radiator and motor. if there was no anti freeze in the cooling system then there may be a build up of rust in the radiator also

Is it ok to drive a car with a radiator leak, just by filling it up with water?Pepper and cinnamon do NOT work and neither does any stop leak product. Get it fixed properly because when you have a leak, the system can not build the pressure it needs to keep the coolant from boiling off and besides that, it will cause the operating temperature to be wrong and the ECU will see that and set the engine wrong and probably within a year you will have to shell out $300 for a new catalytic converter. Not much savings not fixing the problem. BTW, you should never run a car with just water because that is begging for the engine's metal parts to rust out.7. Is the potato method of fixing a car radiator described in season 8 of Archer a real thing?I haven't seen Archer, but it is sometimes possible to plug pinholes in a radiator by adding things like pepper flakes or maybe potato shavings to the coolant. The fix usually only lasts a little while and it probably doesn't do the water pump any good. If you can see and reach the pinhole you're better off draining the radiator, sanding the area around the hole down to shiny bare metal, and soldering the hole closed with plumber's solder and a torch. Car radiator does this sound like a clog or is this normal? It could be clogged up or you could just be putting more water in than can get out. If you put a hole in a bucket and it will drain 1 gallon a minute and your putting 3 gallons a minute in with the hose, it will overflow. Go to the auto parts store and get some radiator flush and put in it, chances are that if you were not having problems with overheating before and the initial water that came out was not red and yucky looking that you do not have a problem.9.
