Retailers Taking Orders for Laptops with Core I7 Chips

Retailers are now taking orders for what could easily be the world's fastest laptops, powered by Intel's speedy Core i7 desktop processors. U.S. retailer AVADirect and Canadian retailer Eurocom are offering variants of Clevo's D900F laptop with the Core i7 processor, a chip usually included in high-end gaming desktops. The chips, launched in November, were dubbed the "world's fastest chips" by Intel until the company's Xeon server processors were introduced in March. The laptops will come with 17-inch screens and are intended to be desktop replacement PCs. The machines do not skimp on features and include a full array of components one would find in Core i7 desktop systems, according to laptop specifications on the retailers' Web sites. AVADirect, in particular, decided not to wait to bring the Core i7 hardware to consumers in a portable form. "While power usage will be higher, AVADirect does not need to wait until Intel or some other company designs and implements mobile offerings of current desktop hardware," AVADirect said in a statement. Laptop hardware usually lags desktop hardware by up to 12 months, so the desktop hardware needed to be redesigned for notebook usage, AVADirect said. The laptops come with Core i7 920, 940 and 965 quad-core processors running at speeds from 2.66GHz to 3.2GHz, and include 8MB of L3 cache. The laptops draw 130 watts of power, and will come with the X58 chipset and an Nvidia graphics processing unit (GPU) to boost graphics performance. The laptops will support up to 6GB of DDR3 memory, which should provide a tremendous performance boost. The machines will support up to 1.5TB of RAID hard drive storage and include wireless 802.11a/b/g/n technology. They will ship with either Windows Vista or Linux OS. Eurocom's customized Clevo D900F system -- which is called the Panther D900F -- weighs a whopping 11.9 pounds (5.4 kilograms). With standard components, the D900F laptop's starting price is around US$2,500 on AVADirect's Web site. The price crosses $6,000 for an extravagant configuration that includes the fastest Core i7 965 processor, three 500GB storage drives, internal Bluetooth capabilities, a DVD-RW drive and additional cooling features. Intel's Core i7 chips are a significant upgrade over Intel's Core 2 Duo chips, which are currently used in desktops and laptops. The new chips are built on the Nehalem microarchitecture, which improves system speed and performance-per-watt compared to Intel's earlier Core microarchitecture. Each core will be able to execute two software threads simultaneously, so a laptop with four processor cores could simultaneously run eight threads for quicker application performance. Intel has integrated the chips and chipset with QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) technology, which integrates a memory controller and provides a faster pipe for the CPU to communicate with system components like graphics cards. Intel later this year intends to introduce new chips for desktops and laptops. The chips, code-named Arrandale, will be dual-core and start shipping in the fourth quarter this year, with laptops becoming available in early 2010. Arrandale chips are expected to be faster than existing Core 2 Duo chips and consume less power. However, laptops with Arrandale chips may not match the speeds of Core i7 laptops, considering the chips will be dual-core and built to draw limited amounts of power.

1. What should we do first, meditation or exercise?

Interestingly I've just reviewed a few studies on this type of question. The studies were referring to this concept of 'ego deletion' and how it affects exercise - essentially the more cognitively challenging tasks you do through the day, the less 'will power' you have to get through other tasks. Experiments have shown the after someone does a cognitively challenging task, they tend to put out less reps on an exercise. Further research showed that ego depletion is actually thought to be just a low blood sugar problem, and studies have shown that by consuming sugar before a will power requiring task increases performance on subsequent tasks, but I've not read anything about that and exercise - but the idea is supposed to be the same.Coming to meditation, I read one study that did meditation instead of sugar between tasks, and found that meditation seemed to replenish that 'will power' reserve. While it is unsure the mechanism, or if this is still a blood sugar thing, meditation certainly improves your attention, improves emotional regulation, and seems to lower the amount of.... 'erroneous' thinking. The research shows that a brain trying hard to control emotions or hold attention will burn through glucose faster, and connecting that to meditation - it might preserve glucose thus preserving 'will power'So all and all, the science isn't in, but by connecting the dots from a handful of studies it seems plausible that meditation done before exercise may preserve the glucose supply in your brain allowing you to essentially have more 'will power' per say and thus you may see an increase in rep output.What should we do first, meditation or exercise?

2. Are those Wal-Mart carbon fiber paintball barrels any good?

Compared to what? No barrel? Definitely. Your stock barrel? Probably. Other after market barrels. Not compared to most of them. Those barrels cost what, $20? Sure, they are carbon fiber barrels, so it will shoot through breaks a bit better than the stock barrel. From what I've heard they are not too bad, at least not for what you are paying. However, I honestly feel you would get better results with a slightly more costly, better quality barrel. Three barrels come to mind right off the bat and all cost roughly $30. First, the J&J Ceramic barrel, they are wonderful barrels for the cash and shoot through breaks pretty well. They are also fairly light and quiet barrels. However, they only come in black and standard .689 bore size (mine is actually grey, but it's an older discontinued model. Next, the Smart Parts Linear barrel, it's the sleekest looking of the three IMO and it performs pretty well from what I hear. However, it does not shoot though breaks as well as the J&J and it too only comes in standard bore, but it is available in a few different colors. Last, the Custom Products Classic barrel, this barrel is one of my favorite barrels. It does not self clean any better than the Linear, but it is available in many colors and three (3) bore sizes which are; .685, .689, and .693. With more and more paints on the market being small bore paint the .685 works quite well. With the tighter bore you will gain increased efficiency and consistency. As for barrel breaks, so long as you are using quality paint they do not seem to be an issue. Hell, I've used old dimpled Visible Impact with it in my ProMaster and had very few breaks. If I recall correctly I shot nearly 1000 paintballs and only had a handful of breaks(Remember, this was old dimpled/deformed Wal-Mart paint). With my Beast paintballs I have not had one break, but I've only shot around 1000 rounds of those as well. In the past when I still used Visible Impact (before I got that horrible case and switched) I usually only got a few breaks per case (2000 rounds). My J&J has also proved to be a great barrel, but due to being on an old Alley Cat I've had more breaks (due to chopping), but it seems to self clean fairly well and regains most of it's performance. I would like to recommend that no matter what barrel you choose, go with a 12-14". I've heard that some testing has been done and that the results were that under boring with a 14" barrel proved to be the most efficient and did not produce any more breaks than over boring (using quality paint). Naturally if the pant is old, dimpled, deformed, and/or low quality then it's much more likely to break in the barrel when under boring than over boring (assuming it's not the bolt chopping it).

the D5100 has the edge when it comes to performance in low light. Nonetheless, a novice, for the most part, is incapable of using that extra low light performance to their advantage. In other words, the T3i is also a very capable camera, and if you know what you are doing, it, and also the D5100, will both be excellent choices. What it really comes down to is what feels best to you. You can completely disregard Miss Easly's post, as she has no idea what she (presumably) is talking about. Go to a store, test them both out. For low light tests, close the aperture, and up the ISO to see which one has less noise (at equivalent ISOs of course). In the end, it is up to you.
