Lost Souls Live in the Undefined

Have you ever noticed, deal Lost Soul, that the undefined is not given much attention in our society? Im talking about those things that cannot be put into words (I put quotation marks around things because they are not definable, so things is the closest I can get with words).Lets look at the words to the song Its Quiet Uptown from the musical Hamilton:There are moments that the words dont reach There is a grace too powerful to name We push away what we can never understand We push away the unimaginableA few questions I have when listening to this song: why do we push away what we can never understand? Arent the moments that words cant reach the most powerful of all moments? What is this power and is it external to who we are?I will give a few examples that I have experienced in my own day to day living to give you an idea of what I mean. Of course, you know that I spend a lot of time in the nursing home with my job, so if those parts make you queasy, please skip over them.

I take care of a fair number of individuals who are at the end of their life. Ive discovered that end of life is not a very popular topic to talk about, but it has its own beautiful qualities that cannot be defined. It is very clear, LS, that life ends at some point for all of us. When you sit with someone who is dying, you get a very clear sense of the preciousness of life, but the quality I am attempting to describe with words goes beyond preciousness. Life observed in this scenario is so brokenly beautiful beyond the words. Watching someone take their last 3 breaths makes me want to wrap my arms around my own breath and thank the source from where it has come. I know deep down that the source of the breath is the same in both cases, LS.I have also observed, LS, that many individuals enter a state prior to the taking of the last breaths. It is almost like the early stages of labor when someone gives birth. I often walk into a room and know immediately when an individual has entered this stage and I call whatever loved ones I can get a hold of to come sit and hold space for the one dying. I am not psychic and would never think I could answer the question, how long?, but I can sense when death is hovering nearby. When it is the time to sit, hold the dying ones hand, and silently let them know that they are loved and not alone.

To switch gears a bit, when can talk about the other end of life. I have also watched a large amount of births. The energy around birth and death are not all that different, in my experience. Both have brought tears to my eyes for reasons that I cannot described in words. Life, in these circumstances, is so real and raw that there is nothing that can cast a veil on it. It is beautifully undefinable, LS.Birth and death are clearly the big things among the undefined, but they are not the only things.

I recently ran into an old friend in a convenience store. I was immersed in the selection of protein bars, looking at the labels for the added sugar and carbohydrate in each (not very important, I know LS) when this friend came up behind me and asked for protein bar recommendation. At first, I was shocked, then mad, then elated when I saw his face. I laughed when I threw my arms around his neck because there were no words to express how I felt, and none were needed, LS.I will admit one more thing that I place in this category of the undefinable. The first day of school is a very big deal every year, LS. This year I stood with my daughters at the bus stop. We chatted excitedly until the bus pulled up. I hugged and kissed them and sent them on their way, but an ache in my chest brought tears to my eyes as I watched the bus pull away. I was not sad per se, but there was an undefinable quality to that moment which brought me to tears. And, heres the most embarrassing part of this story, LS. I got into my car after they left and drove to work. On my way I saw many children waiting for the bus and I whispered, have a good day to all of them with tears falling on my cheeks. What made me cry, LS?Writing about all of these experiences made me think about a poem by Rumi called A Great Wagon:Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. Ill meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language, even the phrase each other doesnt make any sense. The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you. Dont go back to sleep. You must ask for what you really want. Dont go back to sleep. People are going back and forth across the doorsill where the two worlds touch. The door is round and open. Dont go back to sleep.

I know you are tired and weary after all of my words, sweet Lost Soul. Meet me beyond the words, in the space that cannot be defined by them. In the realness where we truly exist.Talk to you soon, dear Lost Soul

On Jim OLoughlins Dean Dean Dean Dean
While OLoughlins forte is humorous flash fiction, this story collection also brings the sad, poignant, and quietly reflective.Jim OLoughlinFiction | Flash Fiction Collection142 pages5 x 7Trade PaperbackAlso available in eBook formatsReview Format: PaperbackISBN 9780989515122 First EditionTwelve Winters PressSherman, IllinoisAvailable HERE$9.00Any writer who has read his material aloud has learned, often by excruciating trial and error, that some pieces are better suited for performance than others. In terms of prose subgenres, flash fiction presents itself as a natural choice for performative literature: short, punchy, to the point, often written with interesting POV choices, time-compressed to allow for full narrative effect. Flash fiction pieces instinctively tend toward a humorous slant, and many are constructed around a twist or a reveal at the end, much like a short comedic bit. Jim OLoughlin embraces all the limitations/freeing features of this subgenre in his debut flash collection, Dean Dean Dean Dean, creating a fun, playful experience for any reader whos a fan of humor writing. Travis is half a genius. The problem is the other half of him is an idiot. Hes always got a new scam for making money, and sometimes his plans are freaking brilliant [. ] But sometimes Traviss ideas are flat out stupid, like the time he tried to turn aftershave into alcohol. The thing is that when Travis pitches me one of his plans, I can never tell at first whether its a great idea or a disaster.(from Half a Genius)Many of the flash fiction stories contained within the collection possess an innate performative voice, which is understandable as many of them originated as pieces intended to be read aloud at the Final Thursday Reading series, a monthly event of which OLoughlin is the director. The performance aspect of the pieces is something that OLoughlin acknowledges, as the collection is in part dedicated to everyone who braved the open mic. OLoughlin is an excellent performer with a strong grasp of cadence and rhythm, and while the stories do pop as they are silently ingested by the reader, the pieces take on an extra quality when the author speaks them aloud.Because good humorous writing is so difficult to find, the funny stories are often what is highlighted when this collection is discussed: Two drivers at a four-way stop get increasing aggressive about insisting the other vehicle goes first. A spin-off of Iron Chef features two dishwashers cleaning up after the popular cooking show. A yoga instructor uses a session to vent about her frustrating wedding experience. OLoughlin deeply commits to whatever form of humor hes using, whether its observational or satire, Vonnegut-like gallows humor or deceptively playful humor in the tradition of Steve Martin. Although the majority of the pieces follow a build-up and then punchline-type structure, the type of humor itself is dynamic between stories. Calvin had once complained that there were not enough poets in the world. That, of course, was before he had started editing a literary magazine. [] [H]e had begun to wonder whether some sort of licensing system was needed, like the American Medical Association, only for poets. It would limit the number of people who could write poetry and would put restrictions on how many poems could be written in any given year about dead grandmothers, bad fathers, and waves crashing on beaches.(from Simultaneous Submission)Although many of the pieces are funny, or walk the line between being funny and absolutely devastating, the emotional range of the collection itself is expansive. Many of the stories are sad, poignant, and/or quietly reflective: A college woman feels responsible for her dad moving out of the family home. A man flees a natural disaster and finds himself bringing along groceries instead of photo albums and family keepsakes. During a boring meeting, Philip creates a mental People I Love list and reflects on how much he loves his family even when theyre experiencing rough patches. The placement of these somber pieces within the collection feels very deliberate, as they are often sandwiched between humorous stories; the really hard-hitting emotional pieces never appear next to each other. This gives Dean Dean Dean Dean a sense of balance that is often lacking in short story collections, particularly collections that feature flash pieces. But, going back to the performative quality of the pieces, OLoughlin understands the natural ebb and flow of a spoken reading, and the structure of the collection reflects this. You feel bad, but when you visit your dad at his new apartment on the other side of town, it never seems like the right time to say you are sorry. On one level, on a rational level, you realize that he didnt move out because of what you said. He and your mom had been planning to separate for a while [. ] [B]ut you cant help but feel responsible for his leaving. (from The Time of My Life)All successful tragedies, even the Shakespearean ones, have moments of comic relief; inversely, the best comedies have moments of deep, seemingly irreparable despair. All full-length works, from short-story collections to feature films, require emotional contrast, which this collection certainly has. And although I appreciate the adept distribution of comedy and tragedy throughout the collection, my favorite piece is, of course, a funny one. In The Nativity Set, OLoughlin channels the spirit of David Sedaris The Santaland Diaries to weave a story of pure suburban Christmas hell. The narrator is staying at his mothers-in-law house for the holidays with his wife and three-year-old daughter Katelyn. Throughout the story, he attempts to wrangle Katelyn, whose newfound obsessions are playing with the antique nativity set and shouting, Fucking A! at inopportune moments. Because the story relies on a twist at the end, it would be unfair to spoil it with this review. Just know that this is one of the very best stories within the collection and that, when read with the right rhythm, it is explosively hilarious.I jumped up and saw Katelyn playing with my mother-in-laws imported porcelain nativity set, the family heirloom that was the centerpiece for Christmas dinner. It was the worst thing in the house for Katelyn to touch, but there in the manger were the Virgin Mary and SpongeBob SquarePants gazing down on Baby Elmo in the crib.(from The Nativity Set)Along with humor, Dean Dean Dean Dean is rich with pop culture and literary references. The title story is a play on Joseph Hellers Catch-22 Major Major Major Major character, this time within an academic instead of military setting. OLoughlin also undertakes writing a self-referential twenty-first-century revamp of The Metamorphosis entitled The Meta-Metamorphosis. From pop songs to Google searchs auto-correct feature, OLoughlin utilizes dozens of facets of modern culture to construct his stories. Additionally, the author also plays with form, including stories written as announcements, satirical political press releases, and even a short sketch, all of which feel like they are naturally paired with the content and not like a gimmick. OLoughlin even includes meta pieces that critique or at least question what it means to be an artist or a writer, particularly a writer working within short forms. This collection, despite being fewer than 150 pages, contains a vast reservoir of pieces that will appeal to any reader who is even remotely tuned in to contemporary Western culture.Im writing about my future career because that is the assignment for this class. I have to write five hundred words about this topic because that is what you said, Mrs. Keiler. You should know that this is a hard assignment because five hundred words is a lot of words, and after I say I want to be a video game tester I wont have anything left to say and so far thats only seventy-five words.(from My Future Career)Because of the clipped quality of these pieces, I naturally began to wonder what the story lines would look like had the author pushed past the ending he chose instead. I questioned whether or not the stories really ended there, or if they ended where they did just for the sake of the joke. With a few of the pieces, I got the impression that the twist at the end was presented as more important than the story itself, and I sometimes felt a little cheated, having invested myself wholly within the premise of the text. This is a reservation that other readers, particularly those more well-read in the flash fiction genre or in humor writing, might not share with me. And although Im not left totally convinced by the structure of all the flash pieces within the collection, the fact remains that Dean Dean Dean Dean is a fast and enjoyable read that has a good balance of humorous and somber stories. This short collection of short-shorts is one that a reader can come back to again and again, always finding a new joke or reference that she didnt notice the first time around RELATED QUESTION Which bra type do you wear with a loose tank top? Do We Have a Right to Mental Privacy?
This blog post is inspired by Marcello Iencas work on Cognitive Liberty and Philip K. Dicks short story, The Minority Report. One day, we will silently bridge the bio-electronic divide and be able to read and manipulate thoughts. We will need to establish new human rights to protect against the violations of mental privacy. In my writing, the Stepped Reckoner is a computer algorithm that predicts future human behavior based on past behavior within an Augmented Reality Stream (ARS). The Stepped Reckoner determines that Cassandra is a Potential, a future revolutionary who will one day have the knowledge and skills to awaken America of an impending apocalypse. As Cassandra tries to warn others, the Guardians of Peace, the nations secret police force, plunge her into a psychological abyss within the ARS. Cassandras thoughts slowly cease to be her own as the Guardians of Peace use neuroimaging and brain-computer interfaces to read her thoughts, create fear-inducing dreamscapes, and manipulate her behavior without her consent. In Cassandras world, the law has not caught up with technological advances. A right to mental privacy to protect individuals against an authoritarian, fascist government does not exist. The Guardians of Peace manipulate and subdue Potentials, forcing them into submission and causing intense psychological pain.Cassandra receives a shocking headache while asleep. It is a sharp pain that leaves her with a growing urge to end her life by consuming the medications in her bathroom cabinet. She sees a flash of words in the back of her closed eyelids instructing her to kill herself. She throws the drugs down the drain and begins hitting herself to redirect the psychological pain into a physical pain that she can localize. It is a form of self-harm that gets her through the night. After repeated mental intrusions like these, it is how the Guardians of Peace successfully disguise a state-sanctioned murder as a suicide. The challenge in my writing is explaining the technologies, laws, human rights violations, and moral implications while progressing the storyline forward. Any recommendations of works I should read or watch for inspiration?. RELATED QUESTION Why does Australia use the Steyr AUG instead of the M4? A good question. When I was in the Air Force, we used a rifle called the SLR. It was a rugged weapon with a long barrel and open sights. It used the NATO 7.62 round. It could be used as a single shot or as a rapid fire burst. It took a standard 28 round magazine. I really like this weapon as it was very simple to field strip, clean and reassemble plus it was a very accurate weapon, even with the open sights. The Steyr came along and from the outset, I didnt like it. It was a short barrelled weapon, with parts of made from plastic. The magazine, for instance, was made by Tupperware.I found it to be a clumsy weapon to carry on parade and also to fire on the range. It came with a scope, mounted near the rear of the breech. When it was fired, it was important to tuck the weapon into your shoulder as hard as possible. If you didnt, the recoil would push the scope into your eye, earning the shooter a Steyr Eye award. There would be a perfect circle of blood and bruising around your aiming eye. Because of this, many female and some male soldiers refused to use it. Women would need to either not wear a bra or wear one that was elastic all around, as the recoil would punch into bra clips, sending them deep into the skin. One girl I knew was badly injured because her bra strap was twisted and the clip wasnt laying flush with her skin. When she fired her Steyr, the clip on her bra was driven into her shoulder, creating a deep wound and long cut.I dont know why the Steyr was selected by the military buyers. One reason may have been savings in cost per weapon. The SLR was very old, having been used in Korea and also in Vietnam. But, even today, the RAAF uses the SLR for ceremonial duties, such as the Marching of the Colours
Rousseaus Discourses: a Short Critique
In the introduction to Jean-Jacques Rousseaus Discourse on the Origin and the Foundations of Inequality Among Mankind (The 2nd Discourse), Rousseau clarifies the nature of his premise. In particular, he states that it is not factually based. Rather, it is hypothetically based, in a manner which is meant to make the nature of the origin of humanities inequality clear. What this indicates about Rousseaus method in the 2nd discourse is that it is based on a premise that is a hasty generalization on the nature of homo sapiens, which is that we are naturally good. Indeed, the overarching narrative of both of the discourses is that humans are naturally good and institutions make them bad; the latter, -which is highly questionable- is wholly where Rousseau is deriving the former, which is not at all sufficient evidence to suppose the former. Regardless of the empirical validity of the claims which Rousseau makes about early human nature and the inherent corrupting of it by civil society, Rousseaus method is quasi-axiomatic & his view on humanity his highly comparable to that of social-constructionist theory. The account of human nature that Rousseau delineated in the introduction to the 2nd discourse starts with describing the natural state of inequality in humans:Religion commands us to believe that since God Himself took men out of the state of nature immediately after the creation, they are unequal because He wanted them to be so; but it does not forbid us to form conjectures, drawn solely from the nature of man and the beings surrounding him, about what the human race might have become if it had remained abandoned to itself. The natural state of human inequality -which no doubt exists- is derived in the mind of Rousseau by a questionable source. Nonetheless, if we grant this questionable source, it allows for further investigation, which Rousseau obliges to undergo. However, Rousseaus investigations are admitted to put aside the facts. Thus, the entire edifice of Rousseaus examination of humankind is hypothetical and thus should be taken with a grain of salt -or for the staunch empiricist/historian, not at all.Nonetheless, proceeding in the direction of yielding in the face of the implausible axiom regarding the implementation of our natural inequalities, such inequalities do not make humans morally reprehensible; the inequality which made humans bad did not exist in pre-societal human beings. Rousseau describes in great detail the gradual process from early noble humans -whos only inequalities were benign- to modern civil/immoral humans -whos inequalities are morally repugnant. Prior to society, humans were purely interested in self-preservation, and the number of humans on Earth at this time had enough resources to fulfill this role interest. Humans also had a natural pity -i.e. A distaste regarding the suffering of a fellow Sapien; this derived experientially, by humans viewing one another and observing that humans act alike and react in similar ways to similar stimuli (for example, suffering in response to physical pain), thus springing the love of well-being. Rousseau believed that our natural pity is what constitutes a high percentage of what composes moral goodness in a human.Population growth, however, made resources more scarce which created competition amongst humans. The competition for resources sprung a need for creating new means of extracting resources and this made language requirements adapt to a complex manner. It also led to the creation of tools such as bows and arrows. This eventually progressed into the advent of settlement building, which was the epoch of private property that sprung the slippery slope which we now know as the djinn: society. The inequalities which Rousseau deemed to make humans bad are inherent in human society and become worse as society expands. Civil society started with the idea of private property, therefore private property is the origin of moral inequality amongst humans.Civil society diminished human values that Rousseau held to be dear. To put a particular value that he emphasized civil societies direct -indeed causal- role in diminishing simply: [Rousseau was] for Sparta, and against Athens. This value is akin to that of Nietzsches Dionysus in The Birth of Tragedy: chaos unmediated by order (Apollo). Such chaos for Rousseau is the valuation of an attitude that is warlike. The softening of this value began with the invention of homes, which made humans more drawn towards leisure. Climatal circumstances then caused humans to band together and become sluggish en masse.Once all humans have banded together, the development of mankind occurs in the manner of social-construction. Rousseau does not explicitly endorse the empirical blank slate idea, but the way in which humanity forms as described by him, is hardly any different from that; once humans banded together and formed a civil society, civil society became the sole contributor to how a human being behaved. This, of course, was to humankinds detriment. Values like public esteem, intimacy, and the transformation of wants into needs has corrupted man and has driven man away from real virtues such as courage, hawkishness, natural pity and ignorance -the latter of the four is recognized ad nauseam as a supreme virtue in the 1st discourse, and is indeed alluded to as being missing in civil man (no thought for the morrow has been replaced with delayed gratification.)The profoundest solidifier of the moral inequality of mankind for Rousseau was industrialization and agriculture. Private property to such an extent is irreversible and so large that the inherent desire for more wealth and property that comes with private property, is exacerbated to an intolerable level. The moral reprehensibility is illuminated by the phenomenon of individuals seeking to become more wealthy, not so much through real necessity as to overtop others. The context of civil society has also shifted what the terms weak and strong mean. Prior to civil society, the strong did not feel the need to overtop others, as a result of the aforementioned natural pity. Weak and strong were mere physicalities prior to civil society. This changed drastically when the first man said this is mine and became widespread as a result of industrialization and agriculture. Now those who are naturally weak could become strong in the lights of society by gathering more resources and social status than their neighbors. Those who were strong and felt the necessity to overtop others, did exactly that and made their neighbors who were already weak by societal standards, even weaker -the societal measure of weakness being how poor you are; as a result of this [the poor/weak] were obliged to receive or force their subsistence from the rich. Thus the derivation of slavery: the rich viewing it as a right to use the poor to achieve the means of expanding wealth acquisition and for the sake of being cruel itself. Alas! The rich fight, and when they do they let their slaves do the work for them, using zealous calls for emancipation in the form of a liberal constitution as incentive -which, people naturally buy into, as human beings are quite susceptible to zealotry (even though what the zealots promise never comes to actual fruition). The promises of the rich is what keeps the poor in poverty: they willingly fight for protection; it is being the slave of a familiar master, in fear of being a slave of an unfamiliar master.Rousseaus method is quasi-axiomatic. It is axiomatic in the sense that it is completely based upon postulates. This is the central problem of Rousseaus method. Axiomatic systems do not allow anything within it to be called into question. By the very nature of such a system, the premises cannot be called into question, which for obvious reasons is objectionable. Nietzsche rightly points out that philosophical systems display a failure to question ones own assumptions , for example, Rousseau starts out by not questioning and leaving no room to question the fallacious move of basing an entire philosophical discourse on a fictitious account of human history. Outside such a system this move is all too questionable; it is a sleight of hand philosophically to make the reader grant such things unquestionably. Both discourses display little to no self-examination of preconceived notions on the part of Rousseau. Rousseaus thought was imprisoned within his own system -which evidently changed when he wrote The Social Contract. This is applicable to the first discourse as well, in that, (1) The Second Discourse is essentially a justification for the 1st Discourse, so it is a connected system & (2) Rousseau doesnt seem at all keen to open his mind to the possibility that enlightenment has actually benefited humanity -which we now know is empirically true. The resolution to the false-idea that civil society is the source of immortality, of a return to nature is based upon the assumption that humans are good by nature. Given that society already exists, the implementation of such an idea -an idea which is questionable, but unquestioned by the nature of Rousseaus system- would invariably be bloodthirsty revolutionary mobs. In reality, our nature is not good and thus we should not return to nature, [rather] we must cultivate and improve, transfigure and remake our nature. In order to do this we cannot grant that were entirely naturally good: indeed we cannot even grant that weve lost our natural inclinations, as it is consensus in evolutionary psychology that our current social and psychological characteristics were shaped during the pre-agricultural period which Rousseau longs for. So if were naturally good, that good is still with us. Given that sapiens were disposed to settling, in-fighting and causing mass extinctions of animals before civil society, these are evidently also with us still as well -they are the product of our nature, not civil society.Rousseaus quasi-axiomatic system of philosophy displayed in the 1st & 2nd discourses is flawed threefold: (1) for its historical inaccuracy (2) for its unquestionable nature as a system (3) civil society has not diminished the well-being of mankind. The grounds for questioning in the discourses are endless but questioning is itself unquestionable within the context of philosophical systems. Human nature, is not as black and white as Rousseau makes it out to be: if anything, between Rousseau and Hobbes, the state of human nature is a middle-ground between the two; thus postulating one or the other is absurd RELATED QUESTION What is the most uncomfortable item of clothing worn today? i think belts are the most uncomfortable item of contemporary clothing to wear and indeed i would suggest anything that inhibits movement.I am male, it took me over forty years to finally satisfy my curiosity and try on a bra. My Norwegian wife sighed because my back is wider than hers and i was struggling to get the clips together. Might i point out that these are no salicious details of our private intimate life. Neither of us derived erotic pleasure from the moment. She had simply complained that her bra was less than comfy and asked me had I ever worn one. I realised that I had not. Perhaps gender imprinting in the Ireland of my youth had instilled a taboo? I must say that the bra was far from comfy for me too when we evemtually made the neccessary adjustments and got the clasps shut. In case anyone is reading who might be repulsed by my momentary technical transvestism, might I just say heteronormatively, that a life times practice undoing bra clips came into play and i got out of the garmant quicker than you coild imagine. Let me repeat this was not an erotic game- so do not imagine too much. .,Yep thats me done.

They take you through a number of emotions and, even though as with any collection of stories there will be some that resonate more than others, like a childhood memory they will stay with you for long after you turn over the final page. RELATED QUESTION Which bra type do you wear with a loose tank top? Tank tops usually have racerbacks and hence opting a bra to go underneath may seem tricky. This might be because of the revealing shoulder straps. Though almost any casual bra can be opted with a tanktop, here are a few styles that gels the best. 1. Convertible Bra:A modern-day bra that has straps that can be criss-crossed in the shape of an X.2.Tube Bra: Made out of stretchable fabric, this literally has no straps and hence you are free to flaunt any type of back.3.Sports bra:These active bras come in racerback styles and are a great pick with tanktops. Best choice for daily workouts. 4. T-Shirt Bra:If you are someone who is uninhibited about the shoulder straps, there is nothing more comfortable than a cozyT-shirt bra.5.Strapless Bra:Transparent straps are an alternate if you are looking for the dual benefit of unrevealing straps as well as the support of a regular bra. You can also choose to go strapless.6.Bra Clips:This small yet functional accessory can be used to clip the straps at the back for flaunting racer backs. Depending on when the tank tops are worn, the bra style can be chosen accordingly. Dont just stop with this, these days there are lot of inspirations available on the Internet and there is nothing that can stop you from experimenting new ways to wear your favourite tank top
A Short Note About Venture Capital in France
Here you are buddies :)Venture Capital is about taking a lot of risk under a fair dose of uncertainty with high conviction. Its driven by the ambition of supporting talented entrepreneurs willing to create beautifully large companies and therefore generating great (if not tremendous) returns on the long term.Everything around this notion cant be categorised as Venture Capital per se, its just early stage investment, which is more correlated with capital efficiency and risk aversion. Built on wrong groundsThis being said, lets face the truth about Venture Capital in France. It has taken root 20 years ago, primarily driven by tax cuts which created two deviant behaviours. First, opportunistic people took advantage of this initiative to build huge management fees models and Second, those same people preferred to mitigate the risk to limit the standard deviation of their returns where the tax discounts were already covering the losses in the worst case. With the wrong incentiveThis tax-cuts model also exists in the United-Kingdom except that the discount is way higher, allowing people to take real risks (including as direct investors) instead of just mitigating it.Misplaced purpose compound with lack of meritocracyThere is no meritocracy in Venture Capital, whether its in France, in Europe, or even in the US. However, Americans are risk takers and more competitive by default, which are two incredible attributes to strive in Venture Capital. Those two attributes are also true in the UK. As for Germany, it just took two brothers (The Samwers) to create an empire of companies and talents. Regarding the nordics, geography and demography push them to go beyond their borders as soon as possible in order to make it, which foster their international mindset and ambition. France benefits from such an insanely great position, whether we talk about geography, demography and education that it seems we took this comfort for granted and became lazy, risk-averse and opportunistic instead of hard-working, ambitious and driven.A US delegation once studied a factory they were competing with in France and concluded: Were lucky they are so lazy, because with their level of creativity and efficiency they would kick our ass otherwise.French investors lack talent and professionalismIts not true for everyone of course but for a majority of so called early stage investors who have been around for the past 15 years, they have hasically showed a path of mediocrity that weve all taken for granted as a standard, the poor performance of European Venture Capital serving as their great excuse. Fortunately, great entrepreneurs rise up !Fortunately, the growing quality of french entrepreneurs is attracting international investors and pushing local ones to step-up their game or disappear. At least I wish RELATED QUESTION People with really long hair, whats something people with short/medium hair dont understand? And how long is your hair? I have long hair, and at the moment it comes down to about 2 inches above my waist. My hair strands individually are very fine, but I have a whole lot of them, so my hair appears very thick and plentiful. So, whats something people with shorter hair might not get?Its heavier than you might think. It can actually cause head and neck pain, depending on the length and thickness. It takes a long time to dry, so dont expect me to be willing to go outside right after Ive washed it if its chilly or cold out.You end up needing a lot more shampoo and conditioner for your hair to be properly cleaned and conditioned. If you use styling products (I dont), ditto for those. It takes a long time to grow long hair, as well as good care of the hair so that its healthy when it gets to the length you want. Ive had people say that I should chop it off just to see what I think and that itll grow back. Yes, it will grow back, eventually, but it took effort and time to get it like this, so Im not going to chop it off on a whim.Your hair will get stuck in zippers, bra fasteners, purse straps, jewelry, and lots of other things. My bathroom needs to be swept frequently because I tend to shed, and so there is always hair on the floor. Haircuts are easier and possibly cheaper if youve got hair thats long and all one lengthits quite simple to cut straight across.Thats all I can think of for now. Long hair is fun and pretty, but it can also be a pain. Since hair only grows about half an inch a month, it can take a long time to get much length.
Salut Les Frenchies. English First, Please.
Long story short for the lazy ones: If you have even a little ambition to expand abroad or to hire international talents at some point, start introducing english-speaking habits within your organisation as early as you can throughout your companys journey. The by-default behaviour of any french entrepreneur is to let French be the de-facto way of work and communication within the organisation. One doesnt reflect on this subject until expanding abroad or hiring international talents is on the table. And when time has come to embrace this shift from french to english first, well It gets trickyIts a violent shift to have people change the way they work (by definition habits are hard to kill or transform) and update what they have already done (like the tech/internal/external documentation). You really dont want this cultural storm to slow down or damage your organisation. Therefore, include de-facto english speaking habits early on throughout your journey in order to have everyone emotionally & operationally ready to shift at anytime from local to international:Provide your team with tools and courses to improve their level if they need to. You dont want to have anyone behind just because they lacked 1 or 2 hours a week of trainingAsk team members to use english only on slack and/or email. We form habits by doing things in a consistent and disciplined way. Slack is a great start because its mostly internal communication, therefore you dont mix up french and english communications. Make your tech team work exclusively in english and localise all your in-house tools and reports (internal/external documentation, CRM, spreadsheets) in english only.Whenever there is an only-english-speaking person stepping in the office, speaking french must be forbidden. It can appear to be very constraining for a young organisation. However, just like any other habit, it also helps you and your team members develop a stronger mindset and better execution skills.Cheers :) RELATED QUESTION What are the simple hacks regarding bras that every woman must know? Why Arent People Taking Initiative?
A few years ago, Company X was a five-person startup. Everyone talked to everyone every day, and it was super clear what needed to get done if someone saw something not getting done, they went ahead and did it. It was chaotic, but the early employees also found this wear many hats mode exhilarating and inspiring. As Company X grew, it developed into another sort of chaos. A few levels of management were added, communication silos started to develop, and people stopped taking as much initiative. There is a rift of understanding between those at the top and those at the bottom, and for both, it feels like a hopeless situation. Leaders are frustrated that the engineers and designers and product managers on the ground arent ideating, are too permission-seeking, or arent assertive enough. Meanwhile, those exact individuals feel stifled and resort to slogging through their tasks, with little to no context on how they impact the organization. Engineers and designers appear to be unenthused, and execution seems slow, slow, slow. Engineers say they are blocked on design, and design says theyre blocked on product direction. Tech leads and product managers start managing smaller and smaller tasks.Management starts to reassess if they are screening for the right kind of mission-driven aggressive individuals. Engineers start to feel like their learning has plateaued, and a few of those inbound recruiter emails start to look more appealing.Does this sound familiar? This is a hypothetical story but is a common pattern as startups scale. The crux of the problem is this: people do not feel empowered or trusted to take initiative. People working as individual contributors in startups are not inherently lazy. They dont voluntarily work harder for less pay because they want to phone it in. They want to be somewhere where they can solve problems and make decisions about some things in a timely manner without being shot down every time. So what can you do if this is your reality?ListenLack of communication is the cause of many scaling challenges. When there are communication silos, not only does important context on strategy and priorities not make its way to individuals on teams, but managers and execs also dont get valuable information about team dynamics. You may be puzzled up top about why certain engineers dont seem as motivated anymore, but the why may seem super clear to someone else. Find a few of the more well-connected and emotionally intelligent individuals and have frank conversations with them. You may discover that theres a toxic presence on the team who shoots down ideas two or three times per engineer is sufficient. Maybe the companys priorities and strategy shift so often, and they dont know current priorities until they have a sprint-worth of work already allocated. Or possibly there just isnt enough time carved out to think about or work on anything other than already scoped-out project work.Align your teamPeople need to have enough context and high-level alignment to make good decisions on their own; otherwise, you get people taking initiative but doing random stuff that is not helpful at all. When startups hit 1020 people, suddenly not everyone can be in the room for every product and strategy meeting. And while the companys leaders are still getting the same level of discourse and strategy discussion as before, individual contributors usually get way less, if any.How do you know if youre providing enough context and high-level alignment on mission and strategy? You can literally just ask someone say, Hey, sometimes its hard to figure out if Im communicating clearly enough, so Id like some feedback. What do you think are our biggest priorities this [week/month/quarter]? Thank them, especially if their answer doesnt match yours theyve helped you successfully identify a communication gap. And dont make excuses it doesnt matter if they were out of the office for the day when you had that impromptu all-hands. Figure out what you can do to fix it. For example, next time, send out an email after the all-hands.Introduce a change elementEveryone else will not get the message that youve decided its time for change. Theyre heads down in all the work theyre doing that already fills their time. If you expect that youll see results just because youve decided there should be change, youll probably be disappointed, and come to the conclusion that these individuals are just not motivated. But remember when they were? When the company was smaller and they did all sorts of creative things, or when you interviewed them and saw and heard the passion in their eyes for their work? You need a change element: something thats the equivalent of a smack in the head (but dont actually do that) that says, HEY! What we were doing was OK but not great! Lets change things up! Maybe thats a hack-week or a hack-few-days, or a team brainstorming offsite. This could be paired with clear communication on the most up-to-date priorities.Changing the status quo iteratively is more difficult than introducing a change element intentionally and setting up the appropriate rewards to incentivize the desired behavior.Set up guard railsEmpowering people to take initiative does not mean a free-for-all. If youve provided high-level alignment, youll also want some guard rails. Some examples:Create a policy that experiments can be shipped to 2% of the user base, and must be analyzed and evaluated within 2 months.Hold a hack-a-thon around a very specific goal (ex. increase weekly return users), and allocate time and resources to build out the best prototypes in production.Specify that 80% of an engineers time should go towards scoped projects, and the remaining 20% should go towards explorations or projects that also fulfill the teams purpose. Have engineers write up or present their explorations. Reward behavior intentionallyAnother phenomenon in companies is that the loudest and most confident-seeming employees get to take initiative or rather, they experience much less friction when they do, so people see them as leaders. People who do not fit that mold generally experience more pushback and questioning when they suggest something they feel is good for the company. So make sure you are rewarding behavior in a way that is fair. You may also want to consult with others to get a few more opinions. If someone took the initiative to start some onboarding docs (good) but was a poor communicator and completely ignored the coding work she had committed to (not so good), be clear in private feedback about how to improve next time.Similarly, if youre managing managers, reward those managers who are successfully empowering their team through public praise or exciting opportunities. If theyre doing it successfully, it may feel like theyre doing less, so pay attention.Remember whatever you reward publicly is what will be emulated.1:1sOne-on-one meetings are a good time to monitor and nudge people in the right direction and debug any snafus in this process. If youre managing managers, have 1:1s with their reports on a less frequent schedule (sometimes called skip-level 1:1s) to prevent communication silos. Identify emerging leaders and high-potential individuals, and encourage them in 1:1s to take more initiative. As people bring up issues theyre encountering, coach them to think about what they would do, and encourage them to do so to help them make that mental leap from someone else should do this to I should do this. Or you may discover that there are still some roadblocks for them that you can help remove. You can do this in meetings as well to make the point in a more public setting.Of course, all this is dependent on believing the premise that empowering individuals at all levels of an organization is something that is desirable and will be beneficial to the company. If you find yourself questioning this premise, spend some time exploring why. Is it a lack of trust? Or insecurity that youll seem irrelevant?A command-and-control management philosophy is frankly not going to get you the best results from your team. As L. David Marquet writes in Turn the Ship Around,Those who take orders usually run at half speed, underutilizing their imagination and initiative. . RELATED QUESTION How can I hide my bra straps?
