Leaders Want Gender Pay Equality, Companies Don't. What's Going On?

I once found myself in an unusual situation at work. It started as all good corporate stories do: at the water cooler.A male colleague was berating the fact that women at the company were paid less than men.

And yet, I (a woman) had to point out that our male CEO openly supports gender pay equality.That's right, a man sticking up for women, and a woman sticking up for a man. It was far more refreshing than the beverage I was drinking - and maybe a sign of the times.

Now, an obvious and uncomfortable question loomed: how can a leader truly endorse gender pay equality if the company's female employees are paid less than men?The answer, it turns out, is not as obvious as we may think.Is gender pay equality a realistic goal?Years later, in another job and at another water cooler, I pointed out a pay gap between two team members to my then-boss.He disagreed with the prognosis. "Adam has been at the company for four years and has moved up to a higher salary based on results.

Anne just arrived a few months ago.

""But given their overall career experience, their level of skill is more or less equal," I said. "And they have the same title. Shouldn't they also have the same salary?""I take your point," came the answer, "but consider this:Anne is still on probation - she is doing great but we need to see consistency.She negotiated her salary quite strongly at the interview stage.

We agreed to pay more than we'd budgeted for that role.We don't want to give raises after such a short time and send the message that we just dole out money."More to the gender pay gapHearing this, it hit me that there was more to this gender pay gap story than government surveys, provocative statistics and media outcries.

If every male and female in the same role:joined the company at the same timehad the same skill levelconsistently got comparable resultsworked exactly the same hoursand were paid differently, the gender pay gap would be obvious and a total disgrace.But that's a lot of factors to pack into an accurate headline, right?Perception is keyLet's lift the lid on this phrase "gender pay gap" once and for all. I am pretty convinced we are not talking about a difference in numbers between one woman's payslip and that of a male counterpart.

Differences in salary will always exist between employees with the same job, male or female, because of the variables mentioned above.What triggers widespread indignation when we see or hear the words "gender pay gap" is a history of workplace sexism combined with the perceived values of those calling the shots.Put simply: we are enraged by the possibility that a boss would deliberately give a woman a lower salary because, as a woman, she's perceived to have less value (potential baby maker, more emotional) and give a man a higher salary because he's perceived to have greater value (traditional breadwinner, more rational).

There are countless documented cases of how value judgments like these have driven decision-making around salaries.However, there is also plenty of evidence to suggest that times are changing.In most Western societies today, the pressure on most women to be financial providers is as real as it has been on most men for, well, a lot longer.

Working mothers, sisters and daughters are showing companies their value - and being rewarded for it. They are becoming leaders. In a handful of years, there will be more female CEOs, CFOs, COOs and women in senior roles across the board.With a new generation of workers and a supportive leadership team, financial discrimination against women is on its way out.

Progress is not as fast as some might like, and there are of course the naysayers who foresee gender workplace discrimination as a fixture for decades to come. And sure, for communities in which a majority do support and reinforce traditional gender roles, this may be the case.But the number of optimists is growing, and their perception that with a new generation of workers and a supportive leadership team, financial discrimination against women is on its way out.

What's driving this?Factor #1: eliminating any kind of workplace discrimination is great for business. At a time of talent scarcity, institutional sexism, racism and any other ism is the kiss of death for companies trying to attract new blood.Factor #2: an uptake in using algorithms to calculate salaries, transforming what has been a subjective and potentially shady process into more of an exact science.

And - couldn't resist writing an article without mentioning them - Millennials. The largest part of our current workforce. And Factor #3.Millennials think beyond gender. Rarely is it pointed out that their so-called "me, myself and I" trait is equally applicable to women as it is to men.

Female millennial workers want career progress as fast as male counterparts. They are just as quick to criticise a flawed management system. And they want to work for a company that openly supports opportunities for all.

So - as conflicted as it is for a CEO to advocate gender equality when his or her company has a gender pay gap, it's a sign we're in the middle of a remarkable transition.Leaders remain in power because they move with the times. Company structures, spaghetti-like as they are, tend to lag behind.

Reassuringly, though, more people at all levels are calling out and putting down discrimination in the workplace which, in the past, has certainly left women with less.We may still see plenty of examples where Adam is paid more than Anne for doing the same job, but when we look a little deeper, to what extent do the gender gap stats reveal villains and victims - or a different story altogether?Over to you! Can I use a TV as a computer monitor?

I just tried doing this with a TV, as a way to get a large, low cost monitor

(HDMI 2.1, 3840x2160 no HI-DPI, late 2017 for reference).

My experience has been different to many other answers here.TL;DR, it can work, with some caveats.Make sure refresh rate is at least 60hz, some televisions may be less,

30hz was default and it was noticeably slow & annoying (mouse motion was noticeably laggy for eg).Turn the back-light/brightness down to avoid too much glare(to go easy on your eyes).Turn off any effects(extra sharpness, auto contrast, motion-smoothing).Most TV's are glossy, this is also personal preference - but can be annoying with other lights/screens are in the room.(personally prefer matte monitors unless working in the dark).When a computer goes to sleep a monitor normally goes blank,

where as TV's often show blue NO-INPUT signal.

While this isn't terrible, it means you can't just shut-down or sleep you're computer and walk off - you need to manually turn the monitor off/onevery-timetoo, with multi-monitor it's twice as annoying!Startup time is likely to be longer than a dumb monitor.

Many/Most TV's these days have some smart-TV capability which takes time to start.

For example, 5-10 seconds instead of 2-3 for a typical monitor.Perhaps this is just my TV model, but some of the pixels at the very edge of the top/bottom aren't visible (2-4 pixels).

This seems to be related to the back-light and viewing angle, (at some angles those pixels are visible)Something I don't think you'd get with a regular computer monitor.EDIT:Adding this after some days of use, and qualifier that this may be something spesific to my configuration - although I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. It's likely something spesific to the TV model - I realize these details are highly anecdotal.I've noticed constant but subtle horizontal 1px blurring ofallred/blue channels (green is fine, black/white on their own are OK too). I think this is not a property of the LED's because the OSD is red and has no blurring at it's boundaries.

This may be something spesific to my hardware setup - so take this with a grain of salt.

If you write code, use syntax highlighting and some of that text is red/blue - you will notice it. Otherwise this would be easy to miss. Happens for bitmap fonts too(no chance of incorrect sub-pixel filtering on fonts).Occasionally I notice visual artifacts(8px wide horizontal blurring between low-contrasting colors).It happens so rarely and is quite hard to notice - forcing a full redraw (scrolling or minimize/maximize) resolves.

I can't say this is for sure but suspect HDMI, having a good quality graphics card and cable, I think there may be some degradation of the image(never experienced this with DVI on the same graphics card).Just adding this last point since I would really like a WYSIWYG display of my graphics cards output. Not a"probably close enough"picture.Overall it's OK, but would think twice before using a TV as a monitor again.Ideally you could try plugging a laptop/computer into the screen before purchasing it to ensure it works well.
