Scattered Advice for Software Product Designers in 2017
Theres a superabundance of advice for designers online, but I thought Id share in response to a question on Quora a few themes that dont seem utterly ubiquitous and which might be helpful, especially for newer designers or designers working on scaled or social software. I apologize if it turns out not to be worth a dang!Its rare that inventing new interactions is high-leverage. Unless youre working on a new platform or new paradigmatic technology like youre an early GUI designer for the PC in the 1980s, or youre working on VR / AR now you should favor using whatever interactions are commodified, common, and settled. There are a lot of reasons for this. Usually its our best practices that are commodified, but regardless of whats best users tend to master patterns slowly and with great effort, so whatever theyve already mastered is preferable to novel solutions unless those solutions have significant, not marginal, benefits. Dont make web readers scroll horizontally or use some 3D interface; dont make mobile app users force touch to trigger a contextual menu. Nowhere near the number of people a scaled software product targets will be able (or willing!) to learn your novel interactions, even if theyre very, very cool. In sum: usability and creativity can be in tension, and we should favor usability. Weve exaggerated the degree to which product design should be UI design / IxD. (Even our tools exacerbate this).Relatedly, for most designers leverage over existing products is not available in the UI. Rare is the scaled product which, thanks to some new gesture, affordance, visual treatment, or interaction changes meaningfully. Most of what influences these products is upstream of this: less where should the button be and more what is the privacy model; less what does the animation for this transition look like and more how can we align user outcomes with business outcomes; and so on. Snapchats UI is not that important; the fact that they have no profile and therefore you cant be searched and judged by others is. We should try to learn more about business, sociology, psychology, economics, and technological history than we maybe thought we should! If we understand how development works (and fails), how people form mental models, and what the most usable patterns for our platforms are, well be in good shape.Imposter syndrome is fine, as is its absence. The appropriate attitude towards designing complex systems is a blend of humility and confidence. We should be humble because were error-prone, bias-filled, creatively-unpredictable humans who understand insanely little about the world or ourselves, working on systems no one has ever built. Were fools who will up. On the other hand, we should be confident because all we can do is try our best, make mistakes, learn, and improve, and thats a reliable-enough path to warrant optimism. This blend of humility and confidence does indeed make you feel like an imposter, in some ways; but of course, youre not: this is just the job. If you feel anxious because of these countervailing forces, thats natural. If you dont, because you accept that this tension is irresolvable, thats also fine.Take the world its people and institutions seriously. Almost everything in the world can be improved, theoretically. But its also the case that what exists tend to exist for reasons we often cannot understand. Frequently, some solution or system has evolved or emerged over long periods of time in response to causally dense fields of dynamics and entities, and its effects are beyond our reckoning. Designers sometimes act like were the first to show up on the stage of history interrogating human phenomena, which is of course absurd. Something I learned from David Cole is that when evaluating an industry, commercial practice, cultural tradition, social norm, or anything else, start with trying to understand why its evolved, what problems it was the solution to, before doodling out your revolutionary improvement. Assume there are reasons and not just shallow or nefarious ones for why things are the way they are. And always remember that every solution brings new problems. Related to this is the fact that all problems have many solutions; in the words of Karl Popper, Whenever a theory appears to you as the only possible one, take this as a sign that you have neither understood the theory nor the problem which it was intended to solve. In sum: problem-solving is genuinely hard, and we mess it up all the time.Focus on getting better at thinking, communicating, and persuading. The technical and theoretical sides of design obviously merit the most investment, but getting better at thinking, communicating with others, and persuading others is valuable. Specifically, I tend to think designers benefit from working more on (1) epistemology and logical / methodological rigor, so they can understand things more deeply and reach more accurate conclusions; and (2) writing a lot, so they get better at framing positions and persuading others of those positions value. As a very simple example: I wrote Story Thought and System Thought and found many PMs and engineers receptive to this framing of what design is about (and why it often clashes with cultures emphasizing metrics and measurability); some told me theyd never thought about design this way before, whereas many designers I know basically do but have not articulated their position. Related to this: its important to be good with data, analysis, and research, and to know what each can and cannot help with.Do whatever it takes to connect with normal, non-SFBA, non-technical people. Take them seriously. Respect that building mental models for your software isnt something they have time or energy for (or interest in). Try to remember what regular life is like. Everyone knows this, says this, but as an example: if youre making software that presupposes the value of sharing everyday moments, you may forget that many humans in a given day, week, even month do not visit a single photogenic or scenic or significant place, do not have a single party, do not attend a single public event (like a concert), do not like the way they look or their clothes or their jobs, are not proud of their cars, etc. And, of course, they dont know a thing about software: even iOS is extremely advanced to them, confusing, complex. An incredibly high percentage of pitches, portfolio pieces, and startups ignore such realities.As with any advice, there are exceptions and caveats to much of this. For example, my friend Gabriel Valdivia works in VR, and in VR the work of figuring out atomic interaction elements, input systems, UIs, IxD, and all the rest is still very much happening. But for every wave like VR, theres another like wearables: for some time, I saw a lot of portfolios with cool watch apps; I even had one in my portfolio. But it turns out that wearables were somewhat premature and remain irrelevant for almost all designers, such that investing in e.g. new interactions for watch face transitions would have been a waste of time relative to learning how humans think of status and what that means for public behaviors in social software, etc. In sum: curiosity about human systems, respect for what humans experience and what emerges from their societies, a focus on leverage in your work and prioritizations, and some interest in developing intellectual rigor are all really useful and perhaps differentiating for designers in the industry today.Originally posted on Quora. In under a month, this anonymous Instagram account, with just over 20 posts, has pulled in more than 300,000 followers, and its safe to assume the draw is not their actual reading matter.It seems far-fetched that so many people would find themselves clicking on images of, say, a sensitive beard farmer in a knit cap reading Lena Dunhams memoir or a handsome lug in a Carhartt parka perusing what looks to be the Atlantic, until you remember that guys how they look and what theyre wearing have reached a new level of cultural fascination.If you have any doubts about that, consider that on the first day of the mens wear shows at Lincoln Center, V.I.P. guests were ushered discreetly to the Priority Access line to sit on bleachers and watch models parade around in quilted parkas by Richard Chai. Yes, that day is upon us.And come July, when a dedicated mens wear week will be inaugurated at Skyline Clarkson Square, those with a passionate if not in every case occupational interest in the last word in bomber jackets, luxury sweatpants and cashmere Crombie coats will finally have a home.Instead, during the past week, they raced across town through the slush, braving bitter cold Lincoln Center to Wall Street, Hudson to East Rivers and mostly the hectic commute turned out to be worthwhile.Unlike their counterparts in London or Paris, designers here tend to play it safe. This sometimes results in workmanlike seasons when you are more likely to encounter theme-and-variation changes than the riddles and explorations of, say, an artist like Rick Owens, whose recent collection was so upside down and backward that a wearer would be challenged to put Tab A into Slot B.Still, New York can be counted on for fun and good humor, and five years into his tenure at Lacoste, Felipe Baptista Olivera showed how much he has loosened up his design brief for the storied tennis label.Im thinking outside the box within the box, if that makes any sense, the designer said on Saturday. It doesnt, of course, but who cares?On Saturday, Mr. Olivera staged a witty show whose stated sources of inspiration were winter tennis clothes or the 1930s and that perennial favorite of fashion, The Royal Tenenbaums. The candy-colored track suits and teddy bear coat; the Bjorn Borgstyle tennis sweatband; the coats with four sleeves, as if one had been slouched into atop another, were almost direct Wes Anderson quotations.Sloping down the runway with a sly smirk and wearing a tan suit over a polo shirt, the French model and inveterate goofball Felix Gesnouin was Richie Tenenbaum to the life.It was a witty and economical show, its message transmitted clearly. In that sense it contrasted sharply with Ralph Laurens presentation, which opened the week.Few have more shrewdly or diligently mined the iconography of Americana to create a signature style than Mr. Lauren. Fewer still possess his canniness when sourcing and editing its component parts.Yet somewhere between the high-glamour, high-end Purple Label evening clothes he showed in a series of tableaux vivants staged inside his lavish Madison Avenue headquarters and sections devoted to equestrian-themed suiting or else the rough-wear and ski duds displayed in a phantasmagorical Polo Ralph Lauren presentation, the plot got muddled.We were in an Edwardian hunting lodge, then St. Moritz, then a polo stable, then an aprs-ski party at the Caribou Club. The color black was an uncharacteristic stylistic through-line. Squid inky and luxurious, it was rendered as a notch-collar cashmere dinner jacket but also a black-tie boiler suit. Skinny jeans were paired with Michelin Man-scale down puffers in the colors of Candy Crush. Except for the puffers, the suits were generally shrunk almost to pipe-cleaner proportions, a curious choice in a season when many designers suddenly have taken a lively interest in the fat-cat silhouettes on which Mr. Lauren built his brand.If there is one thing on which all contemporary designers seem to agree, its that, going forward, trousers will either be softly tubular or as billowing as a spinnaker. That skinny suit thing is for now kaput.Every single collection has them in some way, shape or form, said Tom Kalenderian, the mens fashion director of Barneys New York, referring to the slouchy and yet luxurious sweatpants that are fast gaining ground on khakis and jeans as staples of work-wear in the age of the open-space workplace. What the chino or the white T-shirt was to postwar America is now being replaced by sweats, he said.Todd Snyder produced what may be the most desirable ones seen in a notably clean collection that alternated tidily tailored corduroy suits and pared-down jackets of shearling or leather with snug sweatpants and shirts categorizable as ath-leisure.Other designers worked in what you might call similar bandwidths. Ovadia & Sons produced a grouping that leaned heavily on knitwear and wardrobe staples like cropped shearling bomber jackets, immaculately detailed and military in its discipline. Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne at Public School dipped into their 90s hip-hop boyhoods to assemble a collection of highly commercial layered separates that capitalized on a silhouette shift already underway: short jacket over knee-length tunic or sweater, trousers under it all, each element delineating a separate anatomical zone.In a nod, as he said backstage, to the nostalgia inherent in futurism, Patrik Ervell brought off a collection of drop-shoulder jackets, bombers with kangaroo-pouch pockets, hugely oversize trousers and footwear so exaggeratedly rounded it wasnt clear whether it was designed to shoe men or horses.Though it came accompanied by some rote blather about power and gender-role reversal, Shayne Olivers Hood by Air show was once you eliminated the shoulderless coats, sleeveless tunic gilets, super-voluminous pleated trousers, stocking masks with graffiti faces drawn on them almost ostentatiously marketable.That remains one of the surprises about this label. Despite its reputation for street cred, HBA has all along prospered by offering unobjectionable mainstream clothes. Along with Marcelo Burlon, Fear of God and Virgil Ablohs Off-White, HBA seems to have a lock on the ubiquitous high-end clothing category with the awful name ath-leisure.Hood by Air makes fine luxurious sweatpants, for instance, trousers that, while they look cool on hangers or runways, do have obvious drawbacks. Unless you happen to be as fastidious about your offhand hotness as those Hot Dudes Reading appear to be, ath-leisure duds can devolve pretty quickly into slob wear. There was gender play in the softness of diaphanous silky fabrics used for mens shirting; in funnel and kimono necklines; in a muted palette of ivory and pale powder pink; in the voluminous and yet somehow still masculine four-pleat trousers that might have been unearthed from the wardrobe of a pimp from the zoot-suit era.There was assurance in an inventive staging that did away with the division between the front and back of the house. And there was hearty confidence in pursuing a vision that owes little to current trends.
