Chinook Gate Connects Families with Parks, Playgrounds, Pathways

As any young family understands, having places to play is important. It's something Brandon and Marisa Wight know well. The couple has three children, aged three years, one year, and one month old. They enjoy making use of Chinook Winds Regional Park in Airdrie, and considering where they purchased their new home, expect them to be regulars. They're now about a five-minute walk away. The Wights are the first people to buy a home in the newest community in Airdrie, Chinook Gate by Brookfield Residential. The new community, slated to have about 820 homes at build out, is located just northwest of Chinook Winds Park. Chinook Gate is accessed by heading west on west on Yankee Valley Boulevard, past 8th Street S.W., and turning left onto Chinook Gate Boulevard."We love that park," says Brandon, highlighting its wide range of things for families to do. It features three playgrounds, a skate park, a multi-use court, volleyball courts, ball diamonds, a toboggan hill, and a spray park, according to the City of Airdrie website."Brookfield is all about creating the best places to call home - in both the homes we build and the communities we develop," says Justin Castelino, marketing manager for Brookfield Residential. "The park fits so well with our commitments to active living and bringing people together. It is a very fitting location for our first development in the city of Airdrie."The Wights see its value.Brandon says their children, "really like going to the water park." It causes him to remember living in the neighbourhood of Somerset as a child, which also has a water park, and how enjoyable that was to experience on sunny days. "(The park) always has big community events, as well," he adds. "A bunch of stuff going on there all the time, so there's a lot to do. "It's a good place to bring the community together."The park includes more than two kilometres of paved pathways, something the Wights have embraced. Brandon's a runner and Marisa likes to cycle. "She'll have the Chariot on the back of the bike with our kids, and I'll take a jogging stroller with our third child," says Brandon. "It's a nice family outing." For Brookfield - which is behind such communities as Auburn Bay, Cranston's Riverstone, Seton and Symons Gate - this is its first community in the Calgary area that's outside Calgary city limits. While Chinook Gate's builder group started pre-construction sales earlier this year, the community will be formally launched with its first show home parade on May 26. An event celebrating the launch will run from noon until 4 p.m. It includes carnival games, face painting, food in the show homes, and other family-oriented activities. There will be nine models on display, with examples of front-drive single family homes, which start in the community from the mid-$400,000s, laned single-family homes, starting from the mid-$300,000s, and duplexes starting from the low $300,000s. These prices include the lot and GST. Excel Homes is displaying show homes in all three styles, while Brookfield Residential has laned and duplex show homes, and McKee Homes is demonstrating what it can do in the front-drive segment."We are all bringing fresh new designs to the community, really geared toward active families who are always on the go," says Castelino. "Distinct architecture and community vision will help bring a complete look to the community and help preserve the investment people are making in their new home."Chinook Gate will have a homeowner's association that will help maintain the look of the community and organize neighbourly events such as movies in the park and barbecues. The Wights bought the Huntley, a 1,947-square-foot, three-bedroom laned home by Excel Homes, which is one of the models displayed in the new show home parade. They're making the move from a nearby neighbourhood in Airdrie, where they were renting a duplex. After living in several different places over the past five years - improving each time - they look forward to making this their home for the long haul."We're really excited to set some roots and just live as a family - and not move anymore because we moved a lot," Brandon says. He's an electrician who grew up in Okotoks, and Marisa is a professional photographer who grew up in Airdrie."It's perfect for our family," says Brandon of their new home, singling out its open-concept main floor."We really liked the kitchen," he adds, of the U-shaped cooking space along the back of the home. "It's a very well laid out, tons of cabinets. I don't think we'll ever complain that we don't have cabinet space."He also points to the second-floor laundry room and master bedroom with an ensuite and walk-in closet as favourite spaces."We liked the fact that we could pick everything we wanted in the house," Brandon says of the contrast between the places they've rented and building new."We chose most things to be very kid-friendly, easy to maintain and easy to clean," he adds. "We chose carpet that would hide dirt easier, and a bunch of stuff that wouldn't stain easily, and they had a lot of good options for that kind of thing - for young families."WHAT: Chinook Gate is a new community.DEVELOPER: Brookfield Residential.BUILDERS: Excel Homes, Brookfield Residential, and McKee Homes.AREA: The community in located on the southwest end of Airdrie.PRICES: Front-drive single-family homes start from mid-$400,000s, laned single-family homes start from the mid-$300,000s, and duplexes starte from the low $300,000s.
