Can You Define "appropriate Attire?" the Speaker's Lobby ...

There's a flashback scene early in the first season of Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale," as the U.S. transitions into the theocracy of Gilead, where June (Elisabeth Moss) and Moira (Samira Wiley) stop into their regular coffee shop after a run. They're surprised to see a man, not the female barista they know, behind the counter, and his demeanor is anything but friendly. When June's card is declined -we find out later that the government has locked women out of their own bank accounts -the barista turns overtly hostile. He calls them sluts and orders them out of the shop. The women, baffled, look at each other: What did they do to deserve that word and treatment They're wearing their regularworkout clothes, t-shirts and shorts. The standard of appropriate attire and behavior for women in public had shifted - suddenly, violently, and authoritatively -and they were not prepared. The Speaker's Lobby, a room just outside of the House chamber in the U.S. Capitol, isn't exactly Gilead -Paul Ryan still has work to do! -but female journalistshave reportedrecently that they'verun afoul of a vague dress code left wide open to interpretation and enforcement. That sleeveless outfits aren't "appropriate attire" for work might come as a surprise to female journalists, who have made the sleeveless sheath dress so standard on TV newscasts that Slate ran a trend story on their ubiquity in 2013. Even Ivanka Trump, self-appointed doyenne of #WomenWhoWork, promotes them as office wear.As CBS reports, the dress code includes no concrete parameters for women, which makes determination of what is and is not "appropriate" subject to the interpretationof House leadership:Backlash to the complaints counter that the dress code, which also includes an unspoken ban on open-toed shoes, is neither sexist -men apparently weara "tie of shame" if they roll in unprepared, after all -nor partisan, since former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, had been known to punish reporters for the same infractions. But that doesn't mean the policing of what women wear to report on Congress isn't political. Dress codes, other than those imposed for physical safety, are political, especially when their interpretation is left up to the judgment of those in power.Don't take my word for it. Ask a middle school girl who can't wear a tank top to school because officials think she might be a "distraction" to the boys. Ask a young man who's been told by a store owner he has to leave because he's wearing a hoodie. Ask a black woman who's been reprimanded by her white boss who has decided her hair is "unprofessional." Today, yoga pants in school are often deemed inappropriate for girls; in the 1960s, girls had to fight to be allowed to wear pants to school at all. How do we decide what's "appropriate" Depends on who's in charge."Appropriate" is a slippery word. The Latin root proprius -where we get "proper" and "property," too -means "one's own, special, particular, peculiar." Our notions of what is and is not appropriate are therefore neither universal nor static -they are peculiar to specific times and places, and they are ownedby those whocontrol them, which means they can beused as toolsto control others. This is why the right can freak out over Michelle Obama's bare arms during her husband's first congressional address but stay silent or even nod in approval at the appearance of Ivanka Trump's bra strap, acts ofhypocrisy thatprompted pearl-clutching from the left. It's why a sleeveless sheath dress can be entirely appropriate to wear on camera to tell Paul Ryan's constituents what he's doing to dismantle their health care, but not to wear in the presence of the Speaker himself, or at least not in the lobby he controls. This is why invoking "one's own" interpretation of what is appropriate for a female reporter to wear to work while the party in power is busy waging wars on both women and the press is a power play with meaning beyond a petty rebuke.Yes, there are times in life when we shouldprioritize a dress code over our own comfort, namely when physical safety or respect for custom and the occasion are factors. Wear ahardhat on a construction site and rubber-soled shoes on the gym floor. Cover your head, or take off your shoes, or otherwise observe theconventions whenvisiting a house of worship. Attemptto match the general level of formality at a wedding, funeral or job interview. But we should also be aware of how dress codes that are imposed from the top down can be used to put those with less power - or who threaten those who haveit - in their place. There's nothing inappropriateabout awoman's bare arms onCapitol Hill, and by now everyone should know that. What is inappropriate is imposingunreasonable and whimsical restrictions on womenwho are there to do a job that is vital to democracy: holding members of Congressaccountable to the people they ostensibly serve.

Lululemon: Downward Dog Not Required for Returns
FILE - In this Tuesday, March 19, 2013 file photo, a woman walks past the Lululemon Athletica store at Union Square in New York. Lululemon says no demonstrations of yoga positions or otherwise are needed to return its pricey black yoga pants that the company pulled from shelves for being too sheer. The yoga gear maker's policy statement comes after a New York Post report that was widely circulated by the media recounted one woman's tale of being asked to bend over when trying to return some pants to prove they were sheer. (AP Photo/Mary Altaffer)NEW YORK (AP) -- No "downward-facing dog" is required.Lululemon said Wednesday that no demonstrations of yoga or any other positions are needed to return the pricey black yoga pants that the company pulled from shelves last week after finding that they were too sheer."We do not require guests to demonstrate the sheerness of their bottoms," said Sari Martin, who works for communications firm ICR and spoke on behalf of Lululemon. The Vancouver-based yoga gear maker's statement comes a day after a New York Post report that was widely circulated by the media recounted one woman's tale of being asked by sales staff to bend over to prove that the yoga pants she was trying to return were sheer.Martin would not comment on the specific instance recounted by the Post, but said Wednesday that this is not standard policy for Lululemon staffers. To the contrary, she said that people who bought the black "Luon" yoga pants, which cost $72 to $98, since March 1, either online or in store, can return them for a full refund, "no questions asked."The hubbub comes a week after Lululemon said it was recalling its black "Luon" yoga pants, which account for about 17 percent of all women's pants in its stores, because their material was too sheer. The pants are made from a combination of nylon and Lycra fibers. The company still hasn't determined the cause of the problem. And officials have declined to say when the items would be back in its stores. But the company has added more stringent controls and is diversifying its suppliers to make sure it doesn't happen again. The flap is a blemish for a company that has been a superstar in the athletic world. Lululemon has grown to 211 stores, including 135 stores in the U.S. and 51 in Canada, as its yoga and other workout clothing has gained popularity with men and women. Its devoted fans helped Lululemon, founded in 1998, become a $1.4 billion business. But the pants snafu isn't the only quality issue the chain has had, though. The company also has had sheerness problems with swimsuits and light-colored pants.RBC Capital Markets analyst Howard Tubin said that while the sheer pants are an "odd" situation, it's just a growing pain for the rapidly expanding company."They tried to get in front of this by not letting the merchandise stay on store shelves and they're working with vendors to try to figure out how this happened," he said. "They're probably handling it the best way they can."Shares fell 76 cents to $62.27.
Jen Selter's Shapely Bum Has 1.3m Followers on Instagram
Baby got backers... Jen Selter's bum has attracted more than 1.3 million followers on Instagram. Picture: InstagramSource:SuppliedIT WAS a freezing day in New York, but to the 25 bystanders shoving their iPhones centimetres away from Jen Selter's butt, it was hot hot hot.Ms Selter, a 20-year-old Instagram star famed for her large derriere, was demonstrating her squatting technique for the New York Post atop a subway rail in Manhattan, clad in nothing more than a sports bra and hotpink yoga pants.Selter's shapely behind has inspired women and tantalised men on Instagram, where she has over a million followers, the newspaper reports."Is that real?" one guy panted. Another asked for her hand in marriage. Three Hasidic Jews looked on in awe. The police came. And then stood there and enjoyed the show.Ms Selter didn't even flinch."I'm recognised wherever I am," says the 5-foot-6, 51kg Ms Selter, who, since joining Instagram in March 2012, has amassed more 1.3 million followers, including Rihanna, football player Terrell Owens and basketball star Amar'e Stoudemire. "I don't really go to public gyms anymore just because it is a whole big scene when I'm there," says Ms Selter. "I don't like being watched."But she doesn't mind being "liked."A seductive post of hers on the photosharing site - most of which are selfies of Ms Selter in skintight gym wear - can easily rack up more than 70,000 likes."I don't really post a lot of face pictures," admits Ms Selter, whose handle is @jenselter."I mainly do body selfies. Not that I care what people think, but they don't care. They don't want to see my face," she says.Ms Selter, who skipped college for internet stardom, won't disclose how much she's made on her booty fame thus far. But deals with New York water company NY20 and nutrition supplement company Game Plan Nutrition, for which she is a spokeswoman, have helped her rake in "a lot more money than a graduate would be making," according to Ms Selter. She plans to further capitalise on her success with her own line of workout wear - "Everyone always wants to know what leggings I'm wearing. So why not make my own?" - and maybe a chain of "like cool gyms, like with some glowing stuff," she says, imagining a workout paradise."I see myself motivating and inspiring everyone around the world," she explains, maintaining that her photos - like the close-up shot of her sitting atop a workout ball - will remain G-rated."I'll never post a raunchy pic. There's a difference between a porn-site picture and gym wear or bikini wear. Everything's usually yoga pants," says Ms Selter, who, despite her sexed-up image, is a surprisingly naive and soft-spoken girl who uses the word "dope" and lives with her mum on the Upper West Side. She owns more than 150 pairs of yoga pants."Yes, it can be showy, but I've seen a lot worse. And if it motivates people to get their butts up and go to the gym, why not?"The New York native has gained a cult following for her unique ability to simultaneously serve as inspiration for tens of thousands of women and a sex symbol for hundreds of thousands more men."My initial impression was sort of like a fascination," muses 28-year-old fashion photographer Ben Fink Shapiro, who started following Selter on Instagram three months ago."It's sort of like a silent, miraculous observation. Like, how is a body shaped like this?" asks Mr Shapiro, who says his girlfriend is "equally as fascinated and obsessed with her.""She's so skinny. She doesn't have any hips, and then, BOOM, this ass comes out of nowhere, like, God damn!"To Ms Selter, the fame was a sneak attack, too. After graduating from high school, she took a smattering of cosmetology classes while holding side gigs at a plastic surgeon's office and at a gym.Ms Selter started working out - and her butt began ballooning. So she did what any millennial would do: She took some belfies (that's butt selfies, for all the ancients out there)."It's cool seeing your body transform. That's what motivates me," says Ms Selter, who stresses that "fitness isn't just about looks. It's about how you feel."She started posting workout selfies on Instagram in March 2012. She noticed people were reposting her images without credit, so she reached out and asked to be tagged. Before Ms Selter knew it, her fan base got as plump as her rear, amassing nearly 200,000 followers every month. (She quit her gym job when she hit 500,000.)"I'm very proud of her because this is a girl who didn't want to go to college, and she was able to build up this social media in such a way that she has become famous and she is an inspiration and motivation for so many people," says Ms Selter's mother, Jill Weinstein, who only asks that her daughter doesn't end up in Playboy."We can't even get down the street without people stopping us and saying, 'Oh my God, is that Jen Selter? Can we take a picture?'"But with fame came the haters. Ms Selter's been accused of having a surgically enhanced booty and has been called everything from a "butterface" to, well, things that would make porn maven Jenna Jameson blush.Ms Selter doesn't let the negativity bum her out."I've seen fake butts, and they're very nice," says Ms Selter. "They look nothing like mine. I see it as a compliment.""My body's all real . . . from boobs down," adds Ms Selter, who was profiled about her high school nose job in an April 2010 People magazine article about teenagers going under the knife."I grew up in Long Island. I'm Jewish. Jewish girls have big noses," she says. "Probably one out of three girls I know [has] a nose job."A single Ms Selter is keen on keeping her head on her shoulders and her butt (and dreams) as high as the sky."I didn't sign up to be a model or some Instagram person who everyone is judging and looking at," says Ms Selter."With hard work and dedication, anyone can get to where I am."
Wearing Yoga Pants to Church?
you CAN where whatever you want... i would SUGGEST a sun dress or slacks, if its a strict church, wear a formal dress1. Pentecostal religion? Yoga = Bad?Yoga and reiligion are both just things, neither bad nor good2. is it okay for christians to do yoga?what variety of Yoga? They probable wo not like the Yoga of the innovations, by fact it is going against each little thing they tutor. The Yoga of the physique must be wonderful, and the Yoga of the heart is probable semi-ideal, by fact that Christianity does carry forth compassion3. I wanna become a better dancer? How do you know you are going on pointe this year? Did your teacher say that? If you are struggling so much on flat then you really should not be doing pointe and perhaps you should look into getting better training of your teacher plans to put you on pointe when you are having so much trouble. I am going to tell you what I tell everybody. Start doing yoga and pilates. That's how dancers cross train. Yoga is good for flexibility and Pilates is good for strength. Start taking more ballet classes (maybe with a better teacher) Improving your ballet technique can improve your dancing overall. Ballet is very important for dancing as it's the foundation for most dance types. Eat a healthy diet because you are what you eat and a good diet will get you more power. Food is your body's fuel, it is not your friend. And stop comparing yourself so much to other girls. It's easier said than done but you will improve better it you are not so worried about others. Comparison is the their of joy.4. is it gay for men to do yoga? No, it is not gay at all. If they say your gay, just point out how many hot chicks there are there that do yoga, and think it is a turn on. If you do, your friends might join a yoga class.5. What is the most efficient exercise routine? Why?Most answers here are giving you some keys. In my humble opinion, all of them are right, and all of them are wrong, or better said, incomplete. There are two keys for an efficient routine: The most efficient routine is that which is tailored for you. Period. That's why Hollywood stars can get from fat to fit in six months, when to one of us it take years. If you, as do I, have no money for that kind of personal training, then you should learn to do it yourself. Know what works for you and how. Know your weakness and tricks to avoid it. Play to your strengths. So, learn a lot, read a lot, experiment with yourself, and learn the lessons. Do everything. Really. Do not limit your toolbox. When you are a professional something (bodybuilder, athlete, lifter, fighter, etc...) you need to compromise to get a very specific level of proficiency in something. But most of us are not pros. Most of us are guys and gals trying to get fitter, stronger and healthier, in whatever order you put it. So, we do not need that kind of compromises. Doing only one kind of training is not efficient. You need to give your body all kind of stimuli. From all kind of sources. Kept your body guessing. Change things. Because that is, at best, two hours a week (a lot less for most of us), and the rest of the time we are with our bottoms in a damn office chair. So we need all we can get. I will tell you the things I have in my toolbox, the things I do. Some things I do in almost a daily basis (like Yoga), others, three or four times a week (bodybuilding), others, weekly o once in two weeks (calisthenics), other sporadically. But each of them helps a lot, and the specific frequency depends on you (see point 1), and there is no good generic answer: Bodybuilding: This might be my "main" activity. Yoga: All days, almost. Flexibility, breathing and body awareness. Since I started this my workouts have reached a new level... now I know how to breath correctly and have achieved the almost mythical mind-muscle connection. Olympic Lifting: this gives a kind of full body strength and explosive energy that you really need. Also, the best way to wipe your back into form. Olympic Rings: Ok, this is not for everyone. I am small, so is easier for me. But if you want body control, you need this. My workouts have got a new level since many of the things I do in bodybuilding, I do using rings (all kind of dips, for example. And lower abs, from doing it hanged in the pull-up bar, to doing it in the rings, goes a lot better). Calisthenics: sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups, burpees... fast, and furious. Getting a lot of conditioning and explosive strength. As you get more muscular mass, you have to keep your vascular system revving up, so it can take the added effort. Cardiovascular exercise: elliptic, treadmill, running... from HIIT, Tabata versions, to push the EPOC, to steady-state, to keep the resistance. The efficient things in this business are not in the great or the generic. Are in the detail. And there is enough to fill three master degrees. For example, sure as hell that if you want to get good at bodybuilding, you need to learn a lot of anatomies, and fast, because how each muscle works is important as hell to do an efficient workout. And everything is like that. I am sorry there is no easy answer. but there is not . There is no magic workout, no skeleton key to be fit. There is a lot to learn, a lot to practice, and a lot to do. That the most efficient way. Keep yourself to only one kind of exercise could be easier, could be more comfortable, what sure as hell it is not is more efficient.

The Skintight Surprise 300 Women Delivered to Man Who Disparaged Yoga Pants
The same day Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton a "nasty woman" on national television, a different man in a different city utteredwords that generated equal offense."To all yoga pant wearers," wrote Alan Sorrentino, of Rhode Island, in a letter to the editor, "I struggle with my own physicality as I age. I don't want to struggle with yours."Then Sorrentino, 63, boldly declared yoga pants the "absolute worst thing" to happen to women's fashion since the mini skirt. He said that, like the mini skirt, yoga pants are "adorable" on children and fit young women, but that the exercise ensemble is both "disturbing" and "bizarre" when stretched over the thighs of "mature, adult" ladies. He insistedthat a woman flauntingyoga pants in public is no betterthan a man wearing a Speedo to the supermarket. He suggested more sensible alternatives, likeblue jeans or "a nice pair of tailored slacks."He told these women to do themselves a favor. "Grow up," he wrote in theletter, published in the Barrington Times, "and stop wearing them in public." As swiftly as the Etsy shop flooded with coffee mugs reading "nasty women vote" followinglast week's presidential debate, the Internet seized upon Sorrentino's words with ferocity.Critics called them misogynistic and sexist and degrading. They criticized the newspaper for giving him a platform. And theypennedimpassionedodes to their beloved stretchy pants. "He can kiss my yoga pant wearing @$$," wrote one woman. "Yoga pants for days!!!!!!!" declared another. "I dread my next birthday when I will be forced to cast my yoga pants into the fire and watch them burn away along with my 'blessings of youth' as I join the ranks of 'mature, adult women' at the ripe old age of 21," a different woman confessed. On Facebook, another reader informed Sorrentino that, as a matter of fact, her "47 year old butt" looks pretty great in yoga pants. "You lift brah?" she asked. In the face of widespread denunciationand even death threats, Sorrentino told radio station WPROdays later that his letter was intended as a pieceof satire, as a comical respite from the hateful political climate."I assumed the character of this grumpy old man that was railing about womenin yoga pants because he was too tight to just relax and accept himself in his age and his own ways," Sorrentino told WPRO. "It was meant to sound stupid and creepy."But the man's apparent clarification didn't stop nearly 300 women Sunday from squeezing into their own pairs of yoga pants - tight and multicolored - and marching through Sorrentino's Barrington neighborhood. They came at the call of a Facebook event, "Peaceful Yoga Pants Parade," which by the weekend had drawn thousands of supporters."This a wonderful group of people celebrating our bodies and our right to cover them however we see fit," organizers wrote in the event description. "And while yoga pants seem to be a silly thing to fight for, they are representative of something much bigger - Misogyny and the history of men policing women's bodies."So on Sunday, at 2 p.m., the women assembled in the street, side by side.In their hands, photos show, they carried bright pink signs: "PEACEFUL PANTS PARTY!" "WE WEAR WHAT WE WANT." "LOVE YOURSELF."The army of women eventually passed by Sorrentino's home Sunday afternoon, reported NBC 10, where taped to his siding was a side that said: "FREE SPEECH."Sorrentino told WPRO radio earlier in the week that the death threats and expletive-filled voice mails he'd been left were "vicious and intimidating," reminder of the hate he'd experienced over the years as an openly gay man."The fact that this is seen as an appropriate reaction to something I wrote in the paper is really disgusting," he told WPRO. On Sunday, he reiterated that his letter was a joke "A joke is designed to fool people," he told the Providence Journal. "Those people were fooled."But those who marched said it didn't matter what Sorrentino's intentions were, and that ultimately the pants protest wasn't even about his specific words - it was about taking a stand against a culture and climate that allows for the restriction of a woman's free will."Women are fed up with the notion that we have to dress for people's visual pleasure," Jamie Burke, a parade organizer, told the Associated Press. As part of their peaceful pants protest, the women collected feminine hygiene and sanitary products to be donated to a local domestic violence shelter. And then at the end of their march, they gathered for a group yoga session. Namaste.
Cute Yoga Pants?
victorias secret catalog ahs really cute ones and a lot of times theyre on sale1. What exactly does yoga do?It's a faster yoga that increases your heart rate, but still includes the stretches that makes yoga great. If I were you, I would start with a beginner yoga class, where you can learn the basics from an instructor. Knowing the positions well really helps when you move onto power yoga because you need to keep the pace. It's also good to learn some basics from an instructor, so you learn the moves in a way to avoid injury2. When was the International Day of Yoga celebrated?Check out the below article from Sadhguru:International Yoga Day - Message by Sadhguru3. how to do Head to Knee Yoga Pose easily?I have been practicing yoga for many years and I can tell you that everyone is different and finds different poses challenging. Everyone's body is different, some have strength and some have flexibility. Sounds like you are like me in that you are not very flexible. Since I have very tight hamstrings, I can only do head to knee with my knee bent. But there are other poses that I can do well because of my strength. I am sure this is true for you too. The importance thing about yoga is not whether you can "do" the pose, but to establish a regular practice to build strength and mental calmness. It's not about the end result, it's about the practice itself. If you keep at it you will find over time you will be able to achieve poses that you did not think you ever could do. Accept your body where it is today and keep practicing. Since the style of yoga I practice (Bikram) teaches that head to knee is a compression pose, it is more important to touch your head to your knee than to keep your leg straight. Straightening your leg will come over time.4. how do you get rid of back pains?Actually, I am experiencing the same problem as your but my problem is due to back straining. I tried a heating pad on my back and it helped. If it does not help maybe you should go to the chiropractic instead of doctor. I have problems with my back a lot so I do yoga. Yoga helps with stretching on my back too. When you lifting try to be in a good position. Do not pick or lift anything with your back but use your legs. Good luck5. What are your favorite yoga routines?I have many favorite yoga poses but who does not love savasana (corpse pose)? Savasana is also one of my favorite poses to provide an assist to help others deepen into this relaxation pose. I personally like to practice lunging and/or hip-opening yoga poses like bound side angle or revolved crescent shown below. These are some of my favorites but it's important to practice poses that you find challenging too. The ones that seem difficult to stay in are telling you have work to do and need to address the issues of imbalance, strength, flexibility and/or fear that you feel in a pose. Practice, practice, practice. My favorite yoga sequences begin with a few simple poses to ease into the practice (i.e. child's pose, mountain pose), sun salutations to warm up, work poses (i. e. crescent series, triangle series), stretching and, finally, corpse pose6. Should I wear yoga shorts to yoga?I wear yoga shorts, it gets very hot once you start moving if you have anything else on. I do it out of bare necessity7. What is your favorite yoga app?i teach yoga and meditation and love one app out of all the othersYogatailor - Personal Yoga Training8. How to focus when I already have trouble focusing and on medicine that makes it even worse?Sounds really tough! I have trouble focusing too and can't take medication. My doctor suggested I try taking vitamins/supplements. She also suggested I exercise daily, try yoga, and drink tons of water all day. And guess what!!!! It helps so much. The supplements I take daily are: omega 3, amino acids, probiotics, and Acetyl L-Carnitine The exercise and drinking water suggestions seems like an obvious one, but it really does help with focus.

But nothing to baggy and excessively loose like sweats or a jacket. Go for a little warm and soft. if sweats if all that you have go for it. Go barefoot to if you can. Socks are just plain annoying in yoga because you are sliding everywhere. If you have a mat, take it with you. But I am sure they provide as well. Try not to eat right before. Then put your feet up and enjoy every sip, knowing that you are getting about 340 mg of bone-building calcium -- more than 20% of your recommended daily value -- plus a bunch of vitamins and minerals, so the 373 calories are anything but empty.8. Is Yoga compatible with Christianity? To all the misinformed. Yoga is a Hindu practice. Yoga is meditation and prayer. Hindu practice prayer = Prayer to hindu gods. (many Christians churches/groups are currently trying to stop the practice among the "faithful"). EDIT I have done many forms of Yoga, how horribly out of shape must you be in to get any form of exercise out of it (excluding extreme yoga, which tecnically is not yoga).9. What Should i wear on a 12 hour bus ride?Any comfy shorts: cargo, yoga, jean. A cute t-shirt, preferably cotton. For shoes I would wear flats. If you have arch supports put them in the flats for extra comfort! Hope I could help!! Ally D10. are yoga pants appropriate for school?Every woman should be made by law to wear yoga pants11. Men wearing tights to yoga? You must first begin with the initial reason for going to yoga: mind, body, spirit! You are there for a reason; to better yourself. What you wear is not important. However, I have taken many yoga classes and I always ask the instructor what he or she requires. Why? The obvious of course. Your instructor is exactly that, an instructor. Not only do they lead the class, but also check students for proper form and muscle flexion. If you wear baggy sweats your instructor might not be able to give you the feedback necessary. For me, I wear a form fitting coolmax type shirt and leggings or tights. Fabric will depend on the class. Whatever keeps me cool in class is best. For hot yoga I wear a pair of short lycra shorts or a boxcut style mens swim suit and no shirt. Do I worry about modesty? Of course, but you are not at yoga to check out other peoples bodies. If another student has a problem with what I wear that is their problem not mine. Be confident, be comfortable, but most important is be yourself.
Nike Coming for Lululemon, Sharpens Focus on Women's Wear
Nike Inc. is increasing investments in yoga pants and sports bras as part of a quest to revive growth, intensifying its battle with Lululemon Athletica Inc. for women.Nike will open pant studios in 5,000 stores on Nov. 1 to highlight new styles for workouts and leisure, the company said in supplemental documents to an investor presentation on Wednesday. A presence in thousands of stores would dwarf the footprint of Lululemon, which helped turn yoga and fitness gear into everyday attire. It has 421 locations, mostly in the U.S. and Canada.Nike, the world's largest sports brand, plans to spend more on product development for items like sports bras, infusing them with its latest features while also making them more stylish. The company is also revamping its sporty outfits to create head-to-toe looks -- these will be unveiled early next year. The moves show Nike is sharpening and refining its strategy after competitors succeeded in recent years at nibbling away some market share."This $7 billion business will continue to be fueled by more women engaging in sport, wellness and activity," Trevor Edwards, president of the Nike brand, said during the presentation. "Our growth in our women's business is outpacing our men's business, and it will continue to do so."Lululemon declined to comment on Nike's moves. The maker of upscale sportswear has largely been able to maintain its revenue growth in recent years even as competition escalates. This momentum will be tested going forward, and not just by Nike: Inc. is said to be starting an athletic apparel business that also sells items such as yoga pants. To cope with a more crowded field, Lululemon has also pushed into areas such as men's clothing and outerwear.Lululemon shares fell as much as 2.5 percent after Bloomberg reported on Nike's plans. The stock has fallen about 5.8 percent this year.Nike shares rose as much as 4.2 percent to $57.25. They have advanced more than 12 percent in 2017Executing the plan for women's workout gear will be key if Nike wants to reach its forecast for high-single-digit growth over the next five years. During the past two years, sales gains have averaged about 6 percent and Nike shares have declined."We see the opportunity for new growth," Nike Chief Executive Officer Mark Parker said during the presentation. "We've sharpened our approach."- With assistance by Lindsey Rupp
